Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has ended the dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in winning UEFA Player of the Year award after winning the award in Monaco.
The duo of Ronaldo and Messi has closely contested the award the award in recent times but with the Croatian claiming the award it means he has intercepted the reign of the dominance of the two superstars.
The Real Madrid midfielder won the gong with a large margin, beating Ronaldo by a massive point while Messi could not make the list of the finalist.
The Croatian midfielder was 90 points clear ahead of Ronaldo while finishing 179 points ahead of Liverpool Mohamed Salah.
The Jury consists of 80 coaches from the clubs that participated in the UEFA Champions League preliminary stages of the 2017/18, 32 for the Champions League and the UEFA Europa League (48), together with 55 journalists selected by European Sports Media (ESM), representing each of the UEFA member associations.
Each of the representatives voted for the best three players, with the first choice receiving five points, the second; three points and the third; one point.
Aside from winning the best player of the year’s award he also won the best midfielder award for his contribution to Real Madrid and Croatia during the World Cup.

Real Madrid midfielder has won the UEFA best player of the year after shrugging of competition from former team mate, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohammed Salah(whom he faced in last year champions league final).
The midfielder was also the World Cup Golden ball winner at the just concluded FIFA World cup that took place in Russia early this year. And also won the award for the best midfielder category in the UEFA Champions league award today.
In so doing, he has become the first player to win both the World Cup Golden Ball and the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award since Ronaldo in 1998. Amazing right???
The Midfielder is also the 1st Croatian player to win the award
