On Thursday night in Paris, France Football will reveal the winner of the 2017 Ballon d’Or.
A few weeks ago rumours swept social media that Leo Messi had won the award.
Messi had a far inferior last 12 months with Barcelona when compared to what Cristiano Ronaldo achieved with Real Madrid.
The Portuguese star helped Real Madrid win both La Liga and the Champions League last season.
It is true, however, that Messi outscored Ronaldo in the Spanish top flight.
Sorry Leo Messi: Ronaldo wins
Days before the main event, Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo are reporting as fact that Cristiano Ronaldo has won the 2017 Ballon d’Or.
Should that happen, Cristiano will join Leo Messi having won the prestigious award five times.
Mundo Deportivo are so confident in their report, they’ve even gone into details about what’s going to happen on Thursday night at the gala event.
In a giant PR stunt, it’s claimed France Football will hand Cristian Ronaldo the Ballon d’Or trophy at the top of the Eiffel Tower.
They also report that David Ginola will be on hand to hand Ronaldo his fifth Golden Ball.
Cristiano Ronaldo & Real Madrid
While last season was superb for Cristiano Ronaldo, he and Real Madrid are finding this campaign a harder struggle so far.
Athletic Bilbao held Los Blancos to a goalless draw last weekend in Spain.
After 14 rounds of the season, Real Madrid are fourth in the division with 28 points on the board.
The statisticians, especially in Barcelona, are having a field day with Real Madrid this year as they are underperforming by their own high standards.
Real Madrid have made their worst start to a season since 2008, when then-coach Bernd Schuster was fired at this stage of the season.
Right now there is little belief that Zinedine Zidane’s job is under pressure.
