Huge boost for Barcelona as defender pens new contract

Spanish giants Barcelona have this afternoon revealed that versatile defender Sergi Roberto has put pen to paper on a new contract with the club.

La Masia product

Roberto, a 26-year-old Spanish international, came up through the youth ranks at the Camp Nou, before eventually being introduced to the club’s first-team setup in 2010.

After struggling to establish himself as a regular with the Blaugrana over his first few seasons, Roberto managed to make 16 La Liga appearances during the 2013/14 season, though the vast majority of these came from the bench.

It was only in the 2015/16 campaign that the versatile star began to showcase his true worth to the club, with Luis Enrique deploying Roberto as a right-back for much of the season.

He went on to make an impressive 39 appearances between La Liga and the Champions League, racking up a goal and 5 assists in the process.

Roberto has since floated between midfield and full-back for Barca, even appearing in place of Jordi Alba at left-back on occasion.

Fresh terms

The current campaign has seen the 3-time capped La Roja international take his game to a whole new level, though, with his lung-busting runs up and down Barca’s right flank having proven pivotal to the excellent season being enjoyed by Ernesto Valverde’s men to this point.

Roberto has managed to consign big-money summer signing Nelson Semedo to the bench for the most-part, with previous calls for further reinforcement at right-back at the Camp Nou having steadily subsided over recent months.

And the Blaugrana youth product has today been rewarded for his stellar form with a new contract in Catalunya, set to keep him tied to the club until 2022:
